Mosaic Tile Workshop Session A: Sept 12 & 19 from 1–3 PM
Join me, Nicky Kriara, at NIKO Studios for a rare opportunity to learn my approach to ceramic tile making in this two-part Mosaic Tile Workshop on Saturdays, September 12 & 19. I rarely offer public workshops, making this a unique chance to explore the techniques behind my ceramic and mural practice. Choose from Session A: 1–3 PM or Session B: 4–6 PM (limited to 10 participants per session). In this beginner-friendly workshop, you'll create a one-of-a-kind ceramic mosaic inspired by the flowing, animated shapes and graphic lines of my mural paintings. We'll think beyond the traditional square tile, exploring curvy forms, swirling shapes, carved details, and playful textures to create an expressive piece that's uniquely yours. Bring your own ideas or use my templates as inspiration while learning to use a slab roller, design your composition, map out your tiles for glazing, and use drying techniques that help prevent warping. Your finished piece will measure approximately 22" × 14" (roughly the equivalent of 8–10 traditional tiles). During the second class, you'll add color using a selection of studio glazes. We'll also discuss options for mounting, displaying, or grouting your piece, though final assembly and installation will be completed on your own. All clay, glazes, materials, studio tools, and kiln firings are included. The workshop takes place at NIKO Studios in Portland's NE Cully neighborhood; the exact address will be sent after registration. Finished work will be ready for pickup after September 23. $175 per person.
